The 40th anniversary of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer is being celebrated throughout 2025, with the global theme " From Science to Global Action ". The convention, adopted on March 22, 1985, was the first international treaty to recognize the need to protect the ozone layer and laid the groundwork for the Montreal Protocol , which has been successful in phasing out ozone-depleting substances. The Commemorations highlight the convention's role in fostering science-based decision-making and successful international cooperation to address environmental challenges, such as the ongoing recovery of the ozone layer. The central theme, "From Science to Global Action," emphasizes the connection between scientific discoveries about ozone depletion and the international response that led to the convention and the Montreal Protocol.  The Vienna Convention was a crucial first step in establishing that ozone depletion was a global problem, lea...

September 16th marks the anniversary of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and celebrates the progress in protecting the ozone layer and moves to phase out ozone depleting chemicals which are also potent greenhouse gases. “The Montreal Protocol is both an inspirational example of how humanity is capable of cooperating to address a global challenge and a key instrument for tackling today’s climate crisis,” said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. The latest Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion shows that the ozone layer in parts of the stratosphere has recovered at a rate of 1-3% per decade since 2000. At projected rates, Northern Hemisphere and mid-latitude ozone is scheduled to heal completely by the 2030s followed by the Southern Hemisphere in the 2050s and polar regions by 2060. The assessment was conducted under the sponsorship of WMO and UN Environment. The  WMO’s Global Atmosphere Watch Programme , which embraces abo...
